MARINE BIODIVERSITY
The Symposium on Marine Biodiversity in Madagascar, which opened yesterday in Toliara, aims to establish a roadmap for ensuring the sustainable management of the country’s marine ecosystems. This meeting also aims to establish sustainable financing mechanisms for Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) as well as for locally managed marine areas (LMMAs). Madagascar’s marine biodiversity is very rich, with over 5,000 species of fish, 300 species of corals, and 100 species of marine mammals. However, the preservation of these ecosystems faces major challenges, including pollution, climate change, and overexploitation of fishery resources. At the end of two days of discussions, the 80 participants from various sectors present at this symposium will contribute to defining sustainable management models for the marine biodiversity of the island.

PAR 2024
Miora Raharivelo wins the 2024 Architecture Prize of Réunion with the Barefoot College Madagascar project. The project plays on the relationships between interior and exterior spaces through small private terraces, as well as a central patio. This central layout faces the Tsiafajavona mountain and its protected areas. The challenge was to achieve a low-cost project with a focus on sustainable development using local materials and labor. All of this was done with a consideration for natural ventilation, rainwater recovery, and the application of the “Solar Mamas” expertise in the use of solar energy. This space is also a reinterpretation of vernacular architecture from the highlands of Madagascar, using earth as a material. For the dormitory section, pisé is used as a sort of base while bricks encircle and mark the transition to the ridge. The Architecture Prize of Réunion (PAR) aims to reward high-quality architectural achievements in the Réunion Island and the Indian Ocean.
