MINING SECTOR

After three consecutive field visits in May, June, and July, the Inter-regional Directorate of the Ministry of Mines (DIRMIM) in Fianarantsoa recently met with actors in the mining sector in Ihosy in the Ihorombe region. The objective of this meeting was to inform these actors about Law No. 007-2023, which governs mining resources. The responsibilities of the different local authorities in monitoring the activities of the actors in the mining sector, the circulation of products, and the percentage of mining revenues reserved for the municipality and the region were discussed, among other topics. The recent field visits also aimed to visit the artisanal actors in Ihorombe and the South of Haute Matsiatra to confirm the establishment of new supervisory zones, according to the Ministry of Mines.

FRANCE-MADAGASCAR

France is the fourth largest investor in Madagascar, representing nearly one-fifth of foreign direct investment. The two countries are bound by a long-standing friendship based on strong historical and cultural ties. The Minister of National Defense, General Lala Monja Delphin Sahivelo, represented the Malagasy Government at the celebration of the French National Day. On this occasion, he reiterated Madagascar’s willingness to strengthen existing cooperation with France in areas of common interest.

WHALE SEASON-TULEAR

In Tulear, local tourism operators offer various excursions by boat or canoe, allowing visitors to discover whales, especially in Ifaty and Anakao where the marine giants have already been sighted according to tourist guides. Tulear, along with Nosy Be and Sainte Marie, is one of the coastal areas where tourists have the opportunity to encounter humpback whales migrating to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean to mate and give birth during the period between June and September.

ANDROY REGION

The Governor of Androy Region, Soja Lahimaro Tsimandilatse, is stepping down from his position for personal and family reasons. In any case, this is what he explained in a letter of disengagement addressed to the Minister of Decentralization. “I am convinced that by working on the international stage, I will be able to contribute even more to the development of our country, and this represents an opportunity for me to strengthen my contribution to the nation, by exploiting new international skills and networks for the benefit of Madagascar,” he also stated in this letter, thus referring to a new professional opportunity that he intends to seize and that he could use for the benefit of the entire country, and not just the Androy region. He emphasized that the reason for his resignation is not related to politics or any disagreement with the President. Soja Lahimaro Tsimandilatse has been the governor of Androy region since his appointment on September 25, 2019.

CHEESE FAIR

With the support of the Ministry of Livestock and Agriculture, the first edition of the Highlands Cheese Fair, organized by M’Anja Events, will be held from July 17 to 20 at the Antaninarenina Garden. The event will showcase Vita Malagasy artisanal cheeses produced by about forty small and medium operators from the dairy triangle (Analamanga-Itasy and Vakinankaratra), who have benefited from the support of the Profilait program.

WEEKLY WEATHER FORECAST

A series of frontal passages in the south of the country is expected throughout the week, resulting in a notable weakening of the trade winds. A decrease in minimum temperatures is expected in the highlands and the eastern slope of the country, according to Météo Madagascar. On the other hand, maximum values will remain almost stationary. The minimum temperatures expected during this week will generally range between 01 and 22°C, while the maximum temperatures will vary between 21°C and 35°C.

OPPOSITION

The opposition members within the Firaisankina platform voted for Siteny Randrianasoloniako as the seventh vice-president of the Assembly, as the President of parliamentary opposition, said Alain RAsambany, Secretary-General of the Hery vaovao ho an’i Madagasikara (HVM) party. Alain Rasambany also emphasized that in addition to the President of Parliamentary Opposition, a President of extra-parliamentary opposition will also be appointed by the parties and groups of parties opposing the current regime in the conduct of national affairs.

LOUIS PASTEUR EXHIBITION

The exhibition “Louis Pasteur and his legacy in Madagascar” scheduled in different Alliance Française locations in Madagascar in 2023 and 2024 attracted more than 6500 visitors. For each Alliance Française, the number of visitors ranged from 110 to 600 people in the provinces and over 3800 visitors in Antananarivo. School visits organized for middle school and high school students were an opportunity for young people to discover the work of Louis Pasteur and to generate their interest in science and future scientific careers. This exhibition, organized to celebrate the bicentennial of Louis Pasteur’s birth, traced the life and work of this international figure in scientific and medical research, as well as his universal legacy through major discoveries within the institutes of the Pasteur Network, particularly in Madagascar.

AFAFI-South PROGRAM

The T project company, supervised by the Ny Onintsoa Office, has undertaken rehabilitation works on the irrigation system in the Rural Municipality of Mandiso in Taolagnaro, as part of the Support Program for Agricultural Financing and Inclusive Sectors in the South and Southeast of Madagascar (AFAFI-South) funded by the European Union in Madagascar. The works include the rehabilitation of the dam, the front canal and the channels, the construction of a divider and an ox passage, as well as the establishment of parcel intakes. These works directly benefit 144 members of the water users association and have increased the cultivable area from 36 to 52 hectares. The expected impacts are an increase in agricultural production and household incomes, as well as a contribution to food security in the region.

YOUTH AND CORRUPTION

The National Day of Honesty and Integrity Networks was recently celebrated in Madagascar, under the theme “Motivated Youth to Promote Ethics Today, Ready to Become Responsible Citizens Tomorrow”. The Honesty and Integrity Network (RHI), a movement of young people engaged in the fight against corruption, organized a slam poetry contest on the theme of misappropriation of public assets and funds. The twelve best pre-selected slam poets from the six provinces competed in front of over 1200 young people. The winners of the slam poetry contest received prizes as recognition of their performances. The event also saw the presence of a delegation from the Central Office for the Fight against Illicit Enrichment (OCLEI) of Mali, led by its President, Moumouni Guindo, who acknowledged the effective involvement of young ambassadors and advocates of the Independent Anticorruption Bureau (BIANCO) in the dissemination of ethical messages.
