TABLE TENNIS

The Rakotondrazaka sisters, Ranto and Rina, are crowned U15 African table tennis doubles champions. They won in five sets (9-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-9, 12-10) against the Tunisian pair, Mariam Brahimi and Ela Saidi. The African Youth Table Tennis Championship is taking place in Gaborone, Botswana, until July 21st. Madagascar won the Bronze medal in the team events. It should be noted that the individual events are scheduled for this weekend.

RENEWABLE ENERGY

Six UNICEF offices throughout Madagascar are now exclusively powered by solar panels. For this organization, the switch to solar energy greatly improves the working environment and underscores its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility, demonstrating that operational challenges can be effectively met while contributing to a greener future. It is worth noting that UNICEF Madagascar’s investment in solar energy has brought numerous benefits and significantly reduced carbon emissions by eliminating the use of diesel fuel. Each year, the six solar sites generate 34 MWh of electricity, saving 117.27 tons of CO2 and 43,600 liters of diesel, which translates to approximately $48,550 in fuel costs.

JCET

30 Malagasy soldiers will undergo training through Joint Combined Exchange Training (JCET) exercises with elements of the US Army Rangers. This is an opportunity for Malagasy military personnel to enhance their tactical and operational skills. These high-level exercises, which will last 6 weeks, include weapons training and medical care training, explained sources. The US Special Forces arrived in the country last Friday aboard the U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III. The training is part of the strengthening of military cooperation between Madagascar and the United States.

SUPPORT GROUPS

The Nifin’Akanga movement is organizing support groups on August 3rd for victims of violence (sexual violence, rape and incest, moral violence), GBV, and individuals who have previously undergone pregnancy termination, by choice or for medical reasons. The goal is to allow these individuals to share and express their feelings in order to first overcome these traumas and rebuild themselves. These sessions will contribute to strengthening the resilience of the victims, breaking their isolation, and promoting their healing, explains the Nifin’Akanga movement. These support groups will be held in Antalaha, Antsiranana, Mahajanga, Toamasina, Antananarivo, Fianarantsoa, and Toliara.

BASKETBALL-OLYMPIC GAMES

Malagasy international referee Yann Vezo Davidson is among the referees selected by FIBA to officiate in the Olympic Games. He was chosen for his qualities and performances during international matches prior to the Olympics. “I am honored for the trust and proud of the work accomplished. I will represent all my African colleagues, do my best for the continent and for basketball itself,” said Yann Davidson. The basketball tournament in the Olympic Games will take place from July 27th to August 11th, with preliminary matches held at Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille and the final phase in Paris at Arena Bercy.

BACCALAUREATE-TOAMASINA

The University of Toamasina uses QR codes and a subject geolocation system to secure the exam and prevent leaks of baccalaureate subjects. The 33,323 candidates from the regions of Atsinanana, Analanjirofo, Ambatosoa, and Alaotra Mangoro are invited to respect the established devices. Searches and rigorous checks will take place before and during each test. It should be noted that the baccalaureate exam will take place starting from Monday, July 22.

BFP-IRF TANORA

In Antananarivo, the Women’s Proximity Brigade is ready to collaborate with young people and Peace Volunteers (VFP) in the Andohatapenaka I, Andranomanalina Isotry, Tsarahonenana, and Ankazomanga Sud fokontany. The deputy commander of the BFP received 5 young representatives of the youth participants in the advocacy training of the IRF Tanora project. It should be noted that IRF Tanora is a project that involves young people in peacebuilding and conflict prevention in community and university environments.

RENEWABLE ENERGY

The total commitment volume of the German government to Madagascar, through KfW, in the renewable energy sector amounts to approximately 65 million euros, with 18 million euros for a rural electrification project benefiting several municipalities in the Sava region, which was signed with the Malagasy government last June. In addition, 13 million euros from GIZ for technical cooperation in the same field in Madagascar.
