Let’s venture into the deep southeast of the country, Into the Land of the Thorn People. To crescent-shaped beaches, where the bright azure blue of the Indian Ocean dazzles us. In this idyllic setting, in the shadow of the Anosy and St. Louis mountain range, lies Fort Dauphin. The city offers visitors a variety of leisure activities, such as swimming, surfing, and hiking.

Located 7km north of Fort Dauphin, the Nahampoana Nature Reserve

covers just 67 hectares and is a small private reserve that offers a great alternative to the overpriced Berenty Reserve. The well-maintained gardens showcase an incredible variety of vegetation. Plants that thrive mainly on the humid East Coast grow here, as well as the fauna from Madagascar’s dry areas with triangular palms, spiky Desiderata trees, and giant bamboo stands. In the forest, there are picturesque waterfalls and natural ponds, as well as quiet and secluded spots perfect for a picnic. Or why not glide through the mangroves in a pirogue…
