Lemurs in Madagascar

Animal Observations in the Best Conditions

When planning a vacation in Madagascar, it is understandable that one would want to catch a glimpse of the lemurs living there. These primates are symbolic of the endemic wildlife of this fascinating island, as primates have evolved in a unique way in Madagascar compared to anywhere else in the world. There are numerous species living in Madagascar, and if you, for example, want to observe lemurs in their natural habitat, Madagascar offers the perfect conditions for it.

When booking a trip with us to explore the mountain cloud forests and the east coast with a stay on Nosy Be, you have a good chance of encountering some of the playful climbing artists in their natural habitat. However, luck is not always on the side of tourists embarking on a 4-day tour in the Andringitra National Park, for example. At certain times of the year, it can be difficult to observe the animals. Furthermore, the habitats of lemurs are increasingly threatened today: deforestation, logging, and the desertification of entire regions are responsible for lemurs now only being found in highly restricted areas in the wild.

Discover the Lemur’s Park, located just 25 kilometers away from the capital of Antananarivo, during your journey through Madagascar. This park is home to nine different species of lemurs, providing them with a great and species-appropriate habitat. Unlike traditional zoos with cages and enclosures, the Lemur’s Park offers visitors the opportunity to see these fascinating creatures up close in a more natural setting. Lemurs are known to be shy around humans, adding to the excitement of observing them in their natural environment.

This is not a zoo in the traditional sense: the animals live in a botanical park covering approximately five hectares. There are no fences or enclosures, but individual territories that the animals and families mark out themselves, which are accepted by other animals as well as by humans. Interactions with visitors and caretakers are minimal and limited to regular feedings. In essence, the animals at Lemur’s Park enjoy a life that resembles a regular existence in the wild. Additionally, Lemur’s Park often houses rescued animals that have been captured by poachers. Animals that have been mistreated or poorly kept in private households are settled in Lemur’s Park

or prepared for independent life in the wild. If you would like to make a short detour to Lemur’s Park at the beginning or end of your journey through Madagascar, we are happy to organize this visit for you. It is generally not a problem to plan a detour via RN 1 if you inform us of this wish in advance. Some of our travel packages, such as our 20-day tour from Antananarivo to Tulear, already include a small time slot for you to visit.
