Part 1: Towards "Terra Incognita Day"
The journey starts in the capital Antananarivo and takes you first on the N7 towards the South/East, dividing into three very different sections: The Highlands and the East Coast, the Land of the Thorn People, and finally the Baobab Tour along the West Coast on the Mozambique Channel. Starting from Antananarivo, you will first travel through a more classic part of the usual travel routes to Antsirabe, Ranomafana National Park, and Manakara. Along the East Coast, from Manakara to Farafangana and Vaingandrano, the itinerary takes you through partially challenging tracks and 10 ferries for river crossings into the deep and hot South. There, you can relax for a few days in Fort Dauphin before the second part of the tour begins. |
Part 2: The Land of the Thorn People.
This part of the journey will surely leave you with unforgettable impressions: vast expanses, bizarre and unique thorn forests in various shapes, and a huge labyrinth of sand tracks that crisscrosses this almost deserted area. At the southernmost tip of Madagascar, Cap Saint Marie, to Lavanono about 30 km northwest of there, is the habitat of the beautiful radiated tortoises. You can still find them there in large numbers, and the impressive size of some specimens is a rarity. |
Part 3: The Baobab Tour in the West
Starting from Tulear, the journey leads through sparsely populated thorn forests, Dideraceae, and Baobab landscapes along the Mozambique Channel to the north. Nowhere in Madagascar, and probably nowhere else in the world, can you see so many species of Baobabs in different, gigantic, and bizarre forms as in this area. Seven of the 8 Baobab species that exist in the world can be found here. After this tour, where hundreds of these giants can be admired and photographed daily without any crowds, the world-famous Baobab Alley in Morondava has almost become inconspicuous. This highlight is still included in the program when visiting Kirindy National Park. This trip can be booked individually, but it can also become a group tour on set dates. Three to four guests at most per off-road vehicle. With a fixed date offer, the trip will definitely take place, and up to 12 guests can independently sign up for this itinerary and the above-mentioned travel dates. The number of fixed bookings will be updated as new guests join. The price for all participants will be cheaper if more guests are involved in the trip. This trip is only feasible during the dry season from mid-May to mid-November. Long journeys in rough terrain, partly uncomfortable accommodations, or mediocre restaurants may have to be accepted in this part, and on such a tour, the unexpected often arises, which may require last-minute changes to the itinerary. There are a total of 11 river crossings by ferry, some with the car through more or less deep water. Despite very little physical effort, good condition is required. The tour is mostly off the beaten path. It is the most beautiful and diverse journey one can imagine in Madagascar. The created tour has been tested, organized, and made possible by us with German thoroughness. Follow-up tours to the Tsingy of Bemaraha or along the RN7, as well as dividing the overall tour into individual sections, are possible and can be requested and planned individually. |
Day 1 - Arrival in Antananarivo
Your first task in Madagascar is to take care of the visa formalities at Ivato Airport. Right after that, your Madagascan adventure begins. We will be there to welcome you in the halls of Ivato. Depending on the time of day, you can either start exploring Tana or head to our Villa Sibylle for your first night's rest. Overnight stay at "Villa Sibylle". |
Day 2 Antananarivo-Antsirabe
As we stop for lunch in Behenjy or Ambatolampy, the outskirts of Tana are already behind us and we find ourselves in the middle of the famous N7. Antsirabe, which we reach after about 170km on a well-maintained road, was originally founded in the 19th century by a Norwegian missionary. The architecture of some buildings in the older part of the city still reflects its history. In a beautiful and peaceful hotel, you can reflect on the first experiences of your journey and with some luck, spot the first chameleons in the garden. Overnight at the "Chambres du Voyageur" hotel. |
Day 3 Antsirabe-Ranomafana
Feel the excitement building as you continue your journey. Today, we will drive on a winding but still very good road to Ranomafana, where the famous national park is located. As the landscape changes to a dense rainforest with lush vegetation and the road leads right through the forest, you know you're getting closer to today's destination. The Ranomafana National Park awaits us, ready to be explored. Overnight at Hotel Thermal. |
Day 4 Ranomafana N.P.-Manakara
As the morning slowly approaches and the mist hangs over the forest, illuminated by the sun, you will open your eyes in wonder at where you are. The Ranomafana forest is one of the last intact cloud forests in the world. A fascinating atmosphere envelops the towering trees on the forest slopes as they awaken. You won't be able to resist the allure of this region. With 12 lemur species, over 100 bird species, insects, frogs, and reptiles to discover, there are several hikes available with local guides. We will tailor our activities to your preferences and fitness level, with the entire morning at your disposal. In the afternoon, depending on the duration of the morning tour in the park, we will continue our journey towards the east. Passing through a unique hilly landscape near Irondro, our route leads us directly to the east coast. After about 3 hours of driving, we will reach palm trees and the endless blue expanse of the Indian Ocean. Manakara is known as the center of the island's spice trade. Spices such as cinnamon, cloves, turmeric, and of course, premium vanilla can be purchased and sampled in unparalleled quality. Overnight stay at the "La Vanille" hotel. |
Day 5 Manakara-Vaingandrano-Sandravinany
On the fifth day of our journey, you will truly experience the extreme and extraordinary landscapes that Madagascar has to offer. The first 180km from Manakara to Vangaindrano are smooth and easy, with the road in very good condition. This route is very long and progress depends on five "ferry" crossings. It is possible that an additional stop may be necessary in Farafangana, depending on factors such as road conditions and weather. In this case, the tour will take an extra day, with an additional night spent at the "Concombre masqué" hotel in Farafangana. However, from Vangaindrano, a real adventure begins. We will cross a total of four rivers using ferries, with some of the roads leading to them being very challenging for our driver and our 4x4 off-road vehicle. You will witness yet another change in nature and landscape as the scenery transitions from a misty mountain forest to a much more barren and expansive landscape. The 4th and final ferry of the day has just taken us across the river, and the road winds through the endless rolling hills until we spot a sign in the middle of nowhere. "Le relais du sud-est" is written on the sign, indicating that our accommodation is nearby. A Frenchman has settled here and created a small oasis right by the Indian Ocean, welcoming us with a friendly atmosphere. Spend the rest of the day relaxing and enjoying one of the most beautiful places in Madagascar. Accommodation at Le relais du sud-est or Concombre masqué |
Day 6 Sandravinany-Fort Dauphin
Today is another eventful Day, taking us across 6 more rivers with ferries N° 5 to 10. The road is much better than yesterday, and in some parts, it is even being renovated. The landscape is also noticeably different from the previous days. After ferry N°9 in Vatomirindy, the first trees and typical vegetation of the East coast become visible. This section not only offers an exciting adventure but also showcases a unique and ever-changing landscape. There are about 50 km left to reach Fort Dauphin (Taolagnaro), and it takes a good 2 hours to complete this final stretch. Before reaching the city, there is an opportunity to visit the Nampoina Reserve, which provides insights into the region's wildlife and plant life. Overnight stay at Lavasoa Hotel with dinner at the nearby Talinjoo Restaurant. |
Day 7 Fort Dauphin-Nahampoana Reserve
Experience nature and flora and fauna or simply relax on this day. Whether you prefer a stroll through the markets, a visit to the sandy beaches, or the activities in the Nahampoana Nature Reserve, we will tailor our services to your needs and support you throughout. This approximately 67-hectare reserve impresses with its diversity. The highlight of the reserve is definitely the Sifakas. The lemurs here are more accustomed to visitors than those in the wild and can be observed and photographed much more easily. The reserve offers everything in terms of flora, fauna, and landscapes that the, in my opinion, overpriced Berenty Reserve also offers. In the forest, there are waterfalls and natural ponds, as well as peaceful and secluded picnic areas. You can also take a short trip in a pirogue through the mangroves. Overnight stay at Lavasoa Hotel and dinner at the nearby Talinjoo Restaurant. |
Day 8 Fort Dauphin-Lavanono
Early in the morning, we bid farewell to Fort Dauphin. The second part of the incredible trilogy of this journey begins on this early morning. Now, we will discover the real South of Madagascar. Just a few kilometers after Fort Dauphin, you can clearly feel the climatic border, marked by a unique transitional vegetation. It was warm and humid, now it is dry and hot. Rainfall is rare in this area, resulting in a dry and arid landscape. After a few kilometers, we pass by Andohahela National Park, but a visit is not possible due to time constraints. Later, huge sisal plantations appear along the track. In Amovombe, there is the last opportunity to visit a bank and a gas station. We will find no infrastructure until Lavanono. The area is deserted until Tsiombe. The labyrinth of sandy tracks begins, and only absolute professionals with appropriate off-road vehicles can navigate here. Giant radiated tortoises of the species Astrochelys radiata appear out of nowhere. Watching these giants in their natural habitat is fascinating. We pass by Cap Sainte Marie National Park. If time allows, a visit can take place immediately. Otherwise, you can either camp there or continue to Lavanono and stay at Gigi's place. Chez Gigi is a very basic accommodation, but it is the only one around that offers acceptable yet very Spartan comfort. Overnight stay at "Chez Gigi" in Lavanono. |
Day 9 Lavanono-Cap Sainte Marie National Park.
Today, we will spend the day exploring the area around Lavanono and the Cap Sainte Marie National Park. It would almost be a crime not to visit this stunning location. We will head to the southernmost tip of Madagascar and gaze out over the gentle waves of the Indian Ocean, knowing that the next landmass is Antarctica. The Cap Sainte Marie National Park is characterized by a rugged landscape with low vegetation, where Opuntia cacti are abundant and serve as food for the numerous radiated tortoises that can be spotted almost everywhere. We will also visit a sacred cave inhabited by bats in another equally fascinating part of the National Park. Various birds and reptiles can be observed, adding to the overall experience. Overnight stay at Gigi's in Lavanono. |
Day 10 Lavanono-Ambola
Leaving the stunning landscapes of the southern end of our island, we now tackle even more challenging tracks compared to the last few days. At some points, our Land Cruiser can only pass through the cacti with the side mirrors folded in. To reach Ambola, where the starting point for Tsimanampetsotsa National Park is located, it is highly recommended to hire a local driver. Our guide will navigate you through this area without the need for GPS, cell phones, or maps. The track itself is not too difficult, but navigation is best left to the professionals. Overnight stay at Vahombe Hotel. |
Day 11 Tsimanampetsotsa National Park
Explore Tsimanampetsotsa National Park and be amazed by its salt lake inhabited by a colony of over 3000 flamingos, surrounded by stunning landscapes. Madagascar never fails to surprise with unexpected beauty. The reptiles found here are endemic to the area, meaning they can only be found here. You can also visit a cave where fish have adapted to extreme conditions by living in darkness and losing their eyesight. Be sure to stay hydrated as the heat can be intense. Overnight stay at Hotel Vahombe. |
Day 12 Ambola-Soalara-St.Augustin-Sarondrano
In order to reach the ferry between Soalara and Saint Augustin, the tour must be planned accordingly. The ferry operates only 3 times a week. Our route takes us through picturesque fishing villages along the coast to the huge bay of Saint Augustin. Here, the car along with us travelers is loaded onto a large ferry and unloaded in Saint Augustin in less than an hour. It is possible that the ferry is not in operation, in which case a boat transfer from Anakao or Soalara is necessary. From there, we drive over the cliffs to the other side of the bay to the stunningly beautiful Eden Lodge. Overnight stay at the "Résidence Eden Lodge". |
Days 13 and 14 Sarondrano and Surroundings
The landscape and opportunities in the area around Eden Lodge are, in my opinion, unmatched in Madagascar. Activities such as outrigger canoes, motorboats, canoes, off-road vehicles, visits to a huge nature reserve, and even paragliding are available. Whatever activity you choose, reliable and competent guides are at your disposal. For relaxation, you can retreat and enjoy the sunshine with excellent food and 32°C warm water. As a tip, a trip to Nosy Ve Island, inhabited by very rare seabirds, is recommended. An unforgettable picnic in this environment awaits you. Overnight stay at "Residence Eden Lodge." |
Day 15 Sarondrano-Tulear-Ambatomilo
After enjoying a few relaxing days, the journey continues northward on the N9. The adventure begins now. We drive through the Reniala Thorn Forest on sandy tracks all the way to Ambatomiloha. This stretch of road offers some of the most beautiful beaches in Madagascar. I haven't seen any prettier ones elsewhere. The water is turquoise and creates a wonderful contrast with the bright white sandy beaches covered in fine coral sand. The landscape is vast and almost deserted. Even by Malagasy standards, the area is so extreme in its dryness that there are very few villages around. Just before Ambatomilo, there are clusters of huge Baobab trees that are not commonly seen, some grow in groups and look like gigantic bonsais. Amidst this wonderful and impressive nature, we settle into a bungalow hotel that even has hot water. Overnight at the Hotel "Shangri La." |
Day 16 Ambatomilo
Skipping a rest day yesterday would be downright criminal. The location is simply too impressive to just pass through. Take a day to relax in the shade of baobab trees and recharge for the journey ahead towards the north along the coast. White coral sand and blue sea, warmth and good food await you here. Simple and heartfelt comfort at the end of the world.
Day 17 Ambatomilo-Morombe
Our journey takes us through the territory of the Mikea, the legendary smallest ethnic group in Madagascar, along the coast through fantastic thorn forests towards Morombe. The track no longer deserves its name here, instead it is a deep and challenging to drive through deep sand track. The driving experience in our car is similar to driving on a closed snow-covered road that you may be more familiar with. Gigantic baobabs and euphorbias line the way and will leave you in awe. This part of the route showcases the skills of our driver and the 4x4 vehicle. A precise understanding of the achievable, but also the unachievable conditions is essential for deep sand tracks and river crossings. You are in good hands and can enjoy the adventure to the fullest. Finally, we reach Morombe where we are accommodated in a very simple and nice guesthouse. Overnight stay at "chez Katia" in Morombe. |
Day 18 Morombe-Belo sur Mer
To avoid an overnight stay in terrible conditions that I would not want to impose on any of my guests, we must tackle the longest stretch of the journey today. We start our journey at 5 am in the darkness, crossing the dry landscape punctuated by solitary thorn forests, didieraceae, baobabs, euphorbias, cacti, and sometimes even deciduous trees. After about 70km, we leave Manja behind on the right side of the track and continue deeper into the wilderness. After a total driving time of 8.5 hours over sand, gravel, and several river crossings, we reach the salt flats of Belo sur Mer. After this challenging day, we enjoy a dinner in traditional accommodations with sanitary facilities and hot water, a friendly atmosphere, and fairly good food served simultaneously at a communal table with all guests. Accommodation at the Ecolodge du Menabe. |
Day 19 Belo sur Mer - Morondava
Today, after a good night's sleep and a delicious breakfast, we are ready for our last Day on the tracks of Terra Incognita. There are still a few river crossings ahead, one of which is quite challenging, but with the help of our driver, we navigate the cliff safely. Suddenly, an asphalt road appears out of nowhere, and of course, we happily take advantage of it. We drive on this road until we reach Morondava, where we settle in for the night at the "Kimony Resort". |
Day 20 Morondava-Kirindy National Park
From Morondava, we only have to travel 50km of road until we reach Kiridy Reserve. The road consists of both asphalted paths and sandy tracks, but after the experiences we have gathered in the past weeks, neither pose a significant challenge for us or our driver. On the way to the reserve, we pass by one of the most photographed locations in Madagascar - the Baobab Alley, with all its splendor and unique appearance. In the reserve itself, there is a rare opportunity to see Madagascar's largest predator. Fosas can still be found in this area and can be observed daily, although they are very rare and shy. Kirindy is the ideal and almost only place in Madagascar where these animals can be seen in the wild. An evening night walk is recommended here, as many of the lemurs are only active in the darkness, making them easier to find during that time. Overnight stay at Kirindy Resort. |
Day 21 Kirindy National Park-Antsirabe
After another visit to the Kirindy National Park as part of a day tour that lasts at least two hours, we slowly make our way towards Antsirabe. Arriving in the highest city in Madagascar, we can enjoy the refreshing cool air of this thermal town. Overnight at "Chambres du Voyageur" in Antsirabe. |
Day 22 Antsirabe - Antananarivo
After a long time in nature, in the heat of the deep south and along the untouched southern east coast, we return to the bustling capital of Madagascar. This final stage of this extraordinary tour gives guests a different perspective than at the beginning, when the same route was traveled in the opposite direction. These were the first impressions of Madagascar, three weeks full of unforgettable experiences have been lived since. We return to the starting point of the journey, Antananarivo. Overnight at the guesthouse "Villa Sibylle". |
Day 23 Antananarivo and Surroundings
On the final day of an undoubtedly unforgettable journey through landscapes and locations that are unparalleled not only in Madagascar. You can revisit the city of Antananarivo or visit one of the nearby attractions such as Lemurs Park. Alternatively, you can relax in the tropical garden of Villa Sybille's guesthouse. |
Day 24 Return Flight
In the afternoon or evening, we will take you to the airport. The return flight is usually after midnight, so you will appreciate the opportunity for a "Day use" at the hotel to prepare everything calmly before your flight.
Overnight stay at the guesthouse of "Villa Sibylle" |
