14-Day Flight Tour through Madagascar - General Description

We strive to adapt to flight conditions with a maximal degree of flexibility. However, when traveling in a group, improvisation is not always possible, which is why an overview of the trip can be found below in the text. With a bus, a 4x4 vehicle including a driver, two local guides, and a local flight instructor, we will explore the island together – both from the ground and from the air. We will visit impressive flight mountains, as well as landmarks and attractions. Depending on the weather, we will visit a Lemur Park, a botanical garden, take walks to the Lily waterfalls and geysers. This trip is also suitable for non-flying companions.

The trip is divided into three flight areas.

There are some long bus rides to cover the distances between the different flight spots.

1) Antananarivo / Ampefy

Antananarivo and its surroundings, as well as the area of Ampefy-Itasy, offer flights over green volcanic cones: peaceful landscapes and mostly calm and ideal flight conditions.

2) Ambalavao and the Tsaranoro Valley

Ambalavao and the Tsaranoro Valley with Pic Cameléon are the paragliding paradise in Madagascar. The high mountains of the Andringitra Massif, the rock cliffs, and spectacular, unforgettable landscapes, wide valley floors without any obstacles, roads, or power lines make our paragliding hearts beat faster. And that's not all that makes this area the ultimate paragliding spot in Madagascar: stable and easily predictable weather conditions, as well as friendly locals who help us carry our equipment, make the experience even more heartwarming.

3) Soaring over the Mozambique Channel

The deep south: the view is endless, with huge baobabs scattered here and there in savannas and thorn bushes. At the end of the trip, we arrive in Sarondrano. Blue and turquoise as far as the eye can see: we are at the Mozambique Channel. A turquoise lagoon and endless blue skies welcome us. Vezo pirogues await us on the beach and take us to the take-off site, where gentle soaring flights and a beach picnic with a cook await us, the warm sea invites us for a swim. In Saint Augustin, there are a total of three take-off sites, in Soalara and directly above the Eden Lodge, one each – a fantastic way to end the journey! Between the domestic flight and the departure day, we need a buffer time of 36 hours, as domestic flights do not meet European standards and can lead to longer waiting times. We cannot be held responsible for any changes, delays, or cancellations of flights.

Recommendation / Requirements:

The minimum requirement is the A-License. This flight area is suitable for pilots who can take off and land independently – even in strong winds and challenging take-off sites, which are only found on the coast. Landing sites should be recognizable from the air and pilots should be able to approach them independently. Since the altitude differences are usually around 300 meters, thermaling experience is necessary to fully enjoy the flights. Note: There are no cable car ascent aids or forest roads in Madagascar. Ascents are done on foot. A very good physical condition is required. The maximum ascent time is 1 hour. Porters are available throughout the entire trip.

Day 1 - Arrival in Antananarivo

Our German tour guide, Klaus Konnerth, will pick us up at the airport and take us to our nearby hotel. Participants who book the flight we recommend will be picked up by our shuttle service. If you book a different flight, you will need to arrange and pay for a taxi yourself. We will spend the night at a hotel near the airport.

Day 2 and 3 - Ampefy and Surroundings

The area around Lac Itasy invites you to embark on a journey of discovery. We have two days to explore from various volcanic cones. If the weather gods are on our side, we will set off for another thermal flight. There is plenty to see in the area around the lake. Flying is always our top priority, but the area also offers a strikingly beautiful volcanic environment. It is little known, yet one of the most scenic regions in all of Madagascar. Once again, overnight stay at the "Kavitaha" hotel.

Day 4 - Ampefy to Antsirabe

If the new road from Ampefy to Antsirabe is passable at that time, we will quickly pass through the untouched tourist areas on our way to Antsirabe. There, we can visit this charming city and take a flight if time allows. If not, we will head east back to Antananarivo and then south to Antsirabe. As the most important industrial city in Madagascar, Antsirabe is also located in a landscape shaped by volcanic activity from ancient times, giving it its own unique charm. The fertile soils of the region make it the "vegetable garden of Madagascar". We will stay at the Hotel "Chambres du Voyageur" during our time in Antsirabe. [Link to hotel]

Day 5 - Antsirabe – Ambositra – Ambalavao

Early in the morning, we pack up and head south, where we will enjoy rice fields, eucalyptus forests, and the magnificent landscapes of the Malagasy highlands. We make a stop in Fianarantsoa, where we will visit the country's most famous photographer, Pierrot Men. Next, we continue to Ambalavao. Here, the landscape becomes even more impressive: huge granite formations surround us, and the silhouette of the Andringitra Mountains in the background is truly breathtaking. In the evening, we embark on a sunset flight from the "lying woman" when conditions are optimal. This will give us the opportunity to admire the full splendor of this majestic area – a truly unique experience. Overnight at the Betsileo Country Lodge.

Day 6 - Ambalavao – Andringitra Mountains

Welcome to the paradise of paragliders. The towering mountains of Andringitra, the rocky cliffs, and the spectacular, unforgettable landscapes, wide valley floors without any obstacles, roads, or power lines make our paragliding hearts soar. And that's not all that makes this area the ultimate spot for paragliding in Madagascar: stable and easy-to-assess weather conditions, as well as the friendly locals who help us carry our equipment, make the experience even more heartwarming. Depending on conditions, we will spend the rest of the day paragliding here. Madagascar offers extraordinary opportunities for paragliders. The most beautiful and best of them are undoubtedly the Tsaranoro Valley and the Pic Chamäleon. In the early afternoon, we will hike around 30 minutes to the take-off point. And once again, it's time to fly, fly, fly. The region reveals an even greater charm from the air than from the ground. Overnight at the comfortable "Tsarasoa Lodge."

Days 7 and 8 - Tsaranoro and Andringitra Mountains

We hike early in the morning to Pic Chameleon and take flight into the new day. A second flight in the afternoon is usually possible. Depending on the guests' interests, camps can also be organized on the summit of Pic Chameleon or near the take-off site. Otherwise, we will spend the two nights again at the "Tsarasoa Lodge".

Day 9 - Andringitra – Sarondrano

Embark on the final stage of the journey as we head south to the island of Madagascar, where the landscape becomes more barren and remote: savannas, valleys with mango trees, and rocks that every pilot dreams of. The towering Isalo mountain range, home to the country's most significant national park, comes into view. Scarcely any villages, sapphire mines with an almost "wild west" atmosphere, and typical African landscapes surround us. However, at this time of year, the desert is green. The views are almost limitless, with huge baobabs scattered here and there. Before reaching Toliara, the major city on the Mozambique Channel, we turn south and eventually arrive at the former pirate haven of Saint Augustin. Located at a quiet bay at the mouth of the Onilahy River, with the channel behind and the rugged coastline in front, Saint Augustin is a picturesque spot. To conclude this journey, we have chosen the beautiful Eden Lodge on the Mozambique Channel. An exclusive airstrip has been built for us to take off directly from the cliffs above the lodge and land on the beach in front of the lodge. Stay at the "Residence Eden Lodge" for the night.

Days 10 and 11 - Sarondrano – Saint Augustin

Blue and turquoise as far as the eye can see: we are at the Canal of Mozambique, which separates Madagascar from the African continent by about 400 kilometers. A turquoise lagoon, blue sky, and the colorful outrigger canoes of the Vezo await us on the beach to take us to the dunes, where gentle soaring flights are already waiting for us. Flights and/or excursions are on the agenda for two full days. The lodge is beautiful, and every day a logistics plan is set up according to the meteorological conditions to allow unforgettable soaring flights. A great way to end a trip! Accommodations at the "Résidence Eden Lodge".

Day 12 - Saint Augustin – Tuléar – Antananarivo

Depending on the departure time, we need to arrive at the airport in Tuléar on time. If the flight is in the afternoon, the city can still be visited. The return flight to Antananarivo will be with Tsaradia. Antananarivo and Surroundings If the weather conditions allow, flights in the immediate vicinity of the capital Antananarivo are offered. Otherwise, city visits can be undertaken – depending on the interests of the participants. Overnight stay at Villa Sibylle.

Day 13-Antananarivo and Surroundings

Today, you can plan your day according to your personal wishes. Explore the city or take a trip to the surroundings of Antananarivo, where all kinds of fruits and vegetables are grown on large plantations. We highly recommend a visit to the Lemurs Park, where you can get up close to the quirky lemurs. In the evening, make sure to indulge in the culinary delights of the island. We are happy to advise you and provide you with appropriate addresses.

Day 14 - Return flight to Europe

In the afternoon or evening, we will take you to the airport. Most return flights are after midnight, so you will appreciate the opportunity for a "Dayuse" at the hotel to relax and prepare everything before your flight.
