16-Day Nature Tour with Spectacular Experiences in Madagascar

For those who want to fully immerse themselves in the impressive nature of Madagascar, it is worth booking a trip to the lesser-known nature reserves on the island.

There, fascinating animal and plant worlds await, far away from mass tourism in an almost untouched atmosphere.

Explore the world of lemurs: Listen to the songs of the Indri-Indris, one of the largest lemur species, or discover the home of the Bandros, a lemur species that lives above water.

If you are looking for a spectacular and extraordinary nature adventure and can do without a bit of comfort and luxury, then our 16-day trip through the nature parks Andasibe and Tsingy von Bemaraha with a visit to the Kirindy Reserve is just right for you.

Day 1: Arrival in Antananarivo

On the first Day, you will arrive in the capital city of Antananarivo by plane and will be picked up and assisted by us or one of our staff members. Depending on your individual arrival time, a city tour in Antananarivo may be possible afterwards, otherwise, you will proceed directly to overnight accommodation at the Villa Sibylle.

Day 2: Antananarivo to Morondava (Air Madagascar Domestic Flight)

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight from Tana to Morondava. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to the "Kimony Lodge" hotel. Enjoy dinner at the hotel's exclusive restaurant.

Day 3: Kirindy National Park

After breakfast, the driver will pick you up with an off-road vehicle and take you north to the Kirindy Forest. Here, you will have the opportunity to explore the unique dry forest vegetation and its wildlife. In the evening, there will be a night excursion, as the most interesting animals of the reserve reveal themselves at night. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the park.

Day 4: Belo on Tsiribihina-Bekopaka

After breakfast, we head north to the ferry dock. You will board the ferry across the wide Tsiribihina River. On the other side is Belo-sur-Tsiribihina, the capital of the Sakalava of Menabé, the heart of the former kingdom of this once powerful tribe. Lunch will be at the excellent restaurant "Mad Zebu" – now internationally renowned for its top-notch "Nouvelle Cuisine". After lunch, we will travel north for about 5 hours on a bumpy road to the banks of the Manambolo River. Here, we will cross to Bekopaka, the main town of the legendary Bemaraha National Park. Depending on the arrival time, you will have the opportunity to meet your guide for the Tsingy tours and book optional tours right here – at the park entrance! Next, we will transfer to the "Olympe du Bemaraha" hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Tsingy von Bemaraha National Park

After an early wake-up call (5 am), your driver will pick you up and take you to the entrance of the incredibly beautiful "Tsingy" National Park. Here, you can enjoy a half-day or full-day hike, depending on your mood and fitness level. A picnic can be arranged along the way. Keep in mind that it gets very hot in the Tsingy, so it is mandatory to bring at least 3-5 liters of water per person, depending on the length of the tour. In addition to lemurs and a diverse flora, the climbing and hiking trail through the limestone needles and numerous caves of the karst landscape is a highlight of any trip to Madagascar. Afternoon or evening, you will return to the hotel to relax by the pool and enjoy the wonderful sunset over the Manambolo River. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the "Olympe du Bemaraha" lodge.

Day 6: Little Tsingy-Manambolo

After breakfast, your driver will pick you up again and take you to the entrance of the Little Tsingy. A 2-3 hour, easy trail will give you a glimpse into the labyrinth of the "Petit Tsingy". Baobabs, lemurs, and unique viewpoints make this hike unforgettable. You can enjoy an optional lunch at one of the cozy restaurants by the river, followed by another highlight: a pirogue ride up the Manambolo River to the legendary "Vazimba Tombs", the ancestors of the Malagasy people. Visiting a small stalactite cave and the tombs add a touch of magic to this tour. In the afternoon, you will return to the starting point, where a transfer will take you back to the hotel (Olympe du Bemaraha) for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7: Bekopaka-Morondava

After breakfast, check out from the hotel and take the ferry back across the Manambolo River for a challenging 5-hour journey back to Belo-sur-Tsiribihina. Lunch will be provided there. Then, continue the journey by ferry across the Tsiribihina River and drive on the sandy track to Morondava. Depending on the arrival time, you will have the opportunity to do a photoshoot at the famous "Avenue of Baobabs," located 20 km north of Morondava. Despite the many tourists who gather there at this time, it is still a unique and beautiful place. Afterwards, return to Morondava and check in at the "Kimony Resort" hotel. Dinner and overnight stay will be provided there.

Day 8: Morondava-Antsirabe

After an early breakfast, the journey from Morondava heads east and then north to Miandrivazo, where the Mahajilo River and the Manja River merge into the mighty Tsiribihina River. There will be a short break there before heading up through the wild, barren landscapes to Antsirabe. Along the way, you will stop at the gold miners of Diabolava. In the late afternoon, you will arrive in Antsirabe, known as the "City of Gems". Enjoy dinner at one of the excellent restaurants in the city. You will spend the night at the "Chambres des voyageurs" hotel.

Day 9: Antsirabe and Surroundings

In the early morning, you will have the opportunity to visit the famous gemstone market at the Antsirabe garrison and – depending on your negotiation skills! – acquire wonderful fossils, precious and semi-precious stones of all kinds. Next, you will visit "Mamy's Miniworld", where unique miniature cars and bicycles made from recycled materials are crafted, as well as high-quality textile works! Afterwards, you will visit the factory of Malagasy candies, which are made in various flavors according to old tradition and with simple means. Depending on your preference, a visit to the workshop of the "six brothers" may follow. Here, you will see how household items and ornaments are crafted from zebu horn using incredibly primitive methods. An incredible experience! Antsirabe also offers a variety of other attractions, such as the famous thermal bath, the market, and more... Dinner will be served in town according to your preference, and overnight accommodation will be at the "Chambres du voyageur" hotel.

Day 10: Antsirabe-Andasibe

After breakfast, you will continue your journey to Ambatolampy, where you will have the opportunity to visit an aluminum foundry. Then, you will head north along the "Route Nationale 7" to Behenjy, passing by the capital city and eventually turning east onto the RN2. At "Madagascar Exotique," the reserve and private zoo of the famous researcher Andre Pereiras, you will stop and have the opportunity to experience up close the diversity of Madagascar's reptiles and amphibians. Lemurs such as Sifakas and brown lemurs can also be seen frolicking in an adjacent forest area, perfect for capturing some memorable photos. Afterwards, you will continue your journey with a brief stop in Moramanga and finally arrive at the Andasibe National Park, where you will check into your accommodation at the "Eulophiella Lodge." With some luck, you may already witness the famous "Indri-Indris," the last giant lemurs on Earth, singing and roaming near your bungalow. Enjoy dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 11: Andasibe National Park

After breakfast, head to the park entrance for a several-hour excursion to see the Indris. But it's not just for the lemurs that this excursion is unique! Andasibe's rainforest reveals other zoological and botanical treasures that your guide will be happy to show you. Enjoy a picnic or lunch in the town of Andasibe. Then, visit the "Vakona Zoo" located 15 kilometers away. Here, in addition to numerous crocodiles in their natural habitat, you'll also find various lemurs on an island who will literally dance around you for a photoshoot! An unforgettable experience! In the afternoon, return to the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay there.

Day 12: Andasibe-Alaotra See

After breakfast, we head back to the national road and towards Moramanga. Here, the road turns and we embark on a 5-hour journey north to Ambatondrazaka. This significant city near the Alaotra Lake is known as the "heart of rice cultivation" despite its remote location. Numerous government institutions and a vibrant community make the city a real attraction. After a short break, we continue our journey to the shores of the Lake Alaotra to the "Bandro Camp" in Andreba, where you will settle into your (simple!) accommodation. Enjoy dinner and spend the night there.

Day 13: Alaotra Lake-Moramanga

Today, get ready to wake up very early! Around 5 am, we will head to the lakeshore where a canoe will take you to the reed islands of the lake. Here, you can observe the famous Alaotra bamboo lemurs, also known as "Bandros", living in isolated habitats. With a bit of luck, silence, and the right timing at sunrise, you can observe them well. Once again, a unique experience awaits! After returning to the camp, we will drive back to Ambatondrazaka and then back to Moramanga, where we will stay at the best hotel in town. Dinner and overnight stay will be provided there.

Day 14: Moramanga-Mantasoa Visit

After breakfast, you will drive back towards Antananarivo. About 80 kilometers before reaching the capital, you will turn north towards the Mantasoa Lake. The landscape there reveals another highlight: pine and fir forests surrounding the deep blue lake, which was also the birthplace of Madagascar's first industrial revolution. Here you will find the remains of the huge workshops that the Frenchman Jean Laborde founded around 1841 to produce steel, iron, soap, glass, and a wealth of other modern products. The town of Mantasoa also houses the former residence of the famous adventurer and later Vice-Consul of Madagascar, along with his tomb. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the "Eremitage" hotel, which stylistically belongs more to Switzerland and offers an incredible contrast to all the landscapes you have experienced on the red island so far.

Day 15: Mantasoa-Antananarivo

After breakfast, we prepare for the journey to Antananarivo. Once again, you will be staying at the "Villa Sibylle" hotel. Dinner will be served at the hotel. Overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 16: Antananarivo and Surroundings

Enjoy a day in Tana at your leisure: There are numerous attractions to explore in the colorful, chaotic, and diverse capital city. In the evening, transfer to the airport for your return flight to Europe.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

The order of visits may be changed based on local restrictions (weather, festivals, flight schedules, etc.). The program can also be modified by participants if technically and financially feasible. Flexibility and listening to satisfy the participants' expectations are always possible. The hikes and treks are fundamentally tailored to the guests, just like all activities. They can even be canceled upon request and replaced, for example, with an additional beach day. Individual trip planning is possible.
