Pierrot Chan Hong Men, also known as Pierrot Men, was born in November 1954 in Midongy-du-Sud on the East Coast of Madagascar. His father has Chinese roots, while his mother is of French-Malagasy descent. With. For 20 years, Pierrot Men has been operating his first photo lab in Fianarantsoa, where he continues to work to this day. Starting his career was extremely challenging, as he primarily made a living by taking passport photos and occasionally being hired for weddings and baptisms. Despite initially seeing himself more as a painter than an artistic photographer, Pierrot developed an interest in art early on, using his photographs as references for his paintings. It wasn’t until seventeen years into his artistic journey that a friend finally had the courage to tell Pierrot that his photos were much more immediate. His paintings and drawings have a strong impact on the viewer. Pierrot Men describes this moment as the one where he recognized his true calling: it is the moment when he first saw his real talent and, above all, his passion and life’s work in photography. Following this revelation, success came quickly. In 1994, he received the First Prize at the Mother Jones Exhibition in San Francisco, where he was awarded his first Leica camera, which he has carried with him ever since.
